Joseph D. Henry, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Peoria Area Civic Chorale since 1994,
is also a Professor of Music at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois where he has served as the
Director of Choral Activities and the Coordinator of the Music Education program since 1991.
Dr. Henry has degrees in music education/choral conducting from the University of Southern Maine,
University of Maine, and the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri - Kansas City
where he studied conducting with Gerard Chamberland, Dennis K. Cox, Larry Rachleff, Gary Hill,
and Eph Ehly. He taught public school music for ten years in Maine and served as the President
of Maine Music Educators Association 1982-1984. In 2006 he was presented a Lifetime Achievement
Award and inducted into the Peoria Symphony Orchestra's Hall of Fame.
In 2008 Dr. Henry was the recipient of the Helen Cleaver Award for Excellence in Teaching at Eureka College.
He has served as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician at choral festivals, clinics,
and music conventions throughout the United States. Under his direction, choirs have sung for festivals
sponsored by the Music Educators National Conference, the America Choral Director's Association and the
National-General Assembly of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). In addition, Dr. Henry's
choral ensembles have presented concert tours in Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Italy.
